Judy Horacek

Cartoonist, Illustrator and Writer

About Me

Judy Horacek is an award winning Australian cartoonist, children’s book illustrator and writer, known for her wonderful sense of humour and her strong sense of equality and social justice.  Her cartoons can be found on fridges and toilet doors all over the world – sometimes just plain silly but often with an important message.  She has been published in The Age, the Sydney Morning Herald, the AustralianThe Canberra Times and in many books, magazines and journals both in Australia and overseas as well as on posters, greeting cards, t-shirts, mugs – you name it, her cartoons have been on it.  She is currently published in The Age (Fairfax) and has twice been nominated for the Walkley Award for Best Cartoon.

Judy is a witty and engaging speaker on a variety of topics (and always open to new ones) with special interests in the environment, feminism and social justice.  Her presentations are always thought provoking, as well as being very funny.  Over the years she’s done thousands of drawings, and can put them together to given an illustrated talk on just about any subject, from the environment to creativity to feminism to the joys of drawing sheep. Judy is also a very successful children’s book creator, having written and illustrated four picture books on her own, and having done four books with Mem Fox.  Together she and Mem created the wildly successful and much loved Where is the Green Sheep? which won the Children’s Book Council Award in the Early Childhood Category in 2005.

Judy has presented at Writers Festivals in Melbourne, Sydney, Williamstown, Wheeler Centre, Aireys Inlet, Bermagui, Byron Bay and Brisbane, and given talks and keynotes at many places including the National Gallery of Australia, National Library of Australia, National Museum of Australia, Queensland State Library, Gold Coast Arts Centre, Perth Museum of Democracy, Old Parliament House, the Museum of Australian Democracy at Eureka, The Pamela Denoon Memorial Lecture, various conferences and fundraisers, not to mention numerous International Women’s Day events all around Australia.
