About Me

Jill Stark is an author, award-winning journalist and social commentator. She is the author of High Sobriety: My Year without Booze (2013), a best-selling memoir about her journey through a year off the grog, and a forensic exploration of Australia’s binge drinking culture. It was shortlisted for the Kibble Literary Awards and was a finalist in the Walkley Book of the Year. Her extensive coverage of alcohol issues saw her twice (2008, 2011) win the media excellence award at the Australian Drug and Alcohol Awards.

Jill is well known for her campaigning journalism at The Age as a health reporter and latterly as a senior writer, with a passion for human rights and social justice. Her championing of LGBTI equality led to her winning a Victorian Sport Award in 2012 for her work highlighting homophobia in football. In 2014 she was named Straight Ally of the Year at the Globe Melbourne awards, recognising her extensive media advocacy for the LGBTI community.

With a 17-year career in media both in Australia and the UK, Jill is a sought after social commentator, regularly appearing as a co-host on Jon Faine’s Conversation Hour on ABC 774, and as a guest on Channel 10’s The Project and Channel Seven’s Sunrise. She is also experienced as a media consultant and speech writer in the corporate, not-for-profit and political sectors, providing media training, communications strategies and social media expertise.
