About Me

Director and Publisher of Spinifex Press, Susan has worked in publishing for more than two decades. An expert in international feminist publishing, eBooks and independent publishing. English Language Co-ordinator of the International Alliance of Independent Publishers (based in Paris), Susan is also an Adjunct Professor in the Writing Program at James Cook University. Her writing includes poetry, fiction and non-fiction books. Her collection Cow was shortlisted for the 2012 NSW Premier’s Literary Awards and the Audre Lorde Lesbian Poetry Prize (USA); Earth’s Breath was shortlisted for the 2010 Judith Wright Poetry Prize. Her most recent books are Dark Matters: A Novel (2017), Bibliodiversity: A Manifesto for Independent Publishing (2014, translated into Arabic, French, German and Spanish), a poetry collection, Lupa and Lamb (2014) and a verse novel, Limen (2013). Her novel, The Falling Woman was among The Australian‘s Year’s Best Books (1992), The Spinifex Quiz Book in The Australian Educational Publishing Awards (1994) and Wild Politics: Feminism, Globalisation and Biodiversity in ABR’s list of Best Books for 2002. Susan is an aerialist and circus performer; passionate about ancient languages. She has studied Ancient Greek, Sanskrit and Latin. Over more than a decade she has done significant research on lesbians who were tortured.
