Comedy Festival Gig: Raising Funds for Documentary on Stella Young

“I want to live in a world where we don’t have such low expectations of disabled people that we are congratulated for getting out of bed and remembering our own names in the morning.” — Stella Young

At the Victorian Women’s Trust, we firmly believe in the power of storytelling to shift culture and challenge the status quo. Few did this as brilliantly, or as bitingly, as the late Stella Young.

Stella was a fierce feminist, a ground-breaking disability activist, and a comedic powerhouse. Whether she was debunking “inspiration porn” or winning Best Newcomer at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, she moved the needle on how we perceive disability and identity in Australia.

Though we lost Stella in 2014 at the age of 32, her impact remains profound. That is why we are proud to support the push for the long-overdue documentary, Stella: I Am Not Your Inspiration.

Stella Young Documentary Fundraiser: Malthouse Theatre, 11 April

To get this vital film made, a “who’s who” of the comedy world is uniting for a one-night-only fundraiser. Hosted by the incomparable Reuben Kaye, the evening promises big laughs and even bigger heart, featuring a stellar line-up of comics who knew, loved, and were influenced by Stella’s work.

Why This Film Matters

Stella famously refused to be a “feel-good” story for the benefit of others. She demanded agency, equity, and a seat at the table. By supporting this documentary, we aren’t just looking back at a remarkable life; we are continuing the conversation Stella started.
