About Me

Karen Pickering is a feminist organiser and writer based in Melbourne. She was the creator and host of Cherchez la Femme, a live talk-show of popular culture and current affairs from an unapologetically feminist angle, which ran monthly in Melbourne and toured nationally from 2010 to 2016. Karen was the co-founder of Girls On Film Festival (GOFF) and served as its first director. She was also a founding organiser of SlutWalk Melbourne.

Karen’s work has appeared in the The Guardian, The Age, Overland, Crikey, The Drum, and New Matilda. She has spoken on The Project, ABC News Breakfast, ABC2’s Big Ideas, Triple J, Radio National, ABC774 and at The Wheeler Centre. She has appeared at the Melbourne Writers Festival, Adelaide Festival of Ideas, Emerging Writers’ Festival, and the Amnesty International Stop Violence Against Women Film Festival, and she was a jury member of the Human Rights and Arts Film Festival.

She has presented on gender equality and feminist approaches in a variety of educational contexts including workshops in high schools, university lectures and tutorials, master classes, and specialist training in workplaces.

She is the editor of Doing It, a collection of sex-positive writing by women, and is currently working on a large-scale project around menstruation and menopause, in collaboration with the Victorian Women’s Trust.
