Fitted for Work

Fitted for Work finds work for women experiencing disadvantage and equips them to stay employed.

They offer employment services that build women’s skills and develop their confidence in order to achieve meaningful work. Generous donations of high-quality second-hand clothing and the support of skilled and caring volunteers makes this possible. Community partners refer women to Fitted for Work in Melbourne, VIC and Parramatta, NSW.

Leadership and advocacy give clients and thousands of women like them a voice. The knowledge and experience Fitted for Work gains informs and changes government policy.  Perceptions around how women come to be faced with adverse conditions and the impact it has on them is what Fitted for Work strives to change.

Jan Webster and Sue Peterson Sub Fund

The Young  Offenders Ready to Work program is funded by the Jan Webster and Sue Peterson Sub Fund. Sue Peterson established the Sub Fund in hers and her late partner, Jan Webster’s names.

Social justice was always a motivator for Jan and Sue throughout their long and loving relationship. Their shared experiences only made them more passionate about giving back and putting in the hard yards for equality.

The Sub Fund will support a number of issues that have been close to Jan and Sue’s hearts:

• women exiting prison,
• educational and leadership opportunities for Aboriginal women, or
• pathways for women out of homelessness.

Project: Young Offenders Ready to Work Program 2020

Grant type: Sub Fund
Amount: $2,000
Year:  2019-20
Website:  fittedforwork.org/

This grant will enable us to deliver a first of its kind Ready to Work pilot program that will equip 4 young female prisoners with their own mentor for a minimum of 18 months after they have completed our Transition to Work program in their last months in prison. There is no other service that gives this support.

Our mentors will visit each woman fortnightly to build relationships and connections in those final months before release. And when she gets out the mentor will still be there. They will meet regularly in the community, where mentors will support their mentee through the challenges of parole, reconnecting with family and what may have changed for her ‘on the outside’.
