Council of Single Mothers and their Children Inc

The Council of Single Mothers and their Children (CSMC) is a non-profit organisation founded by single mothers to improve both their lives and those of their children. CSMC offer telephone and email support, giving single mothers a greater voice and advocating for their rights in employment, income security, affordable childcare and housing and respectful treatment from government agencies.

This grant was proudly funded by the Ruth Owens and Kevin Lynch Sub Fund, established by the Trustees of the Victorian Women’s Benevolent Trust.

The Ruth Owens and Kevin Lynch Sub Fund provides practical help at critical times that can create real and lasting positive change for women experiencing socio-economic hardship. It supports grassroots projects that address and enhance educational and employment opportunities for:

  • single women as parents, or
  • refugee and migrant women

COVID-19 revealed the critical need for single mothers to be informed about their children’s rights should they pass away. This project will research and provide a legal kit with a checklist including:

  • custody arrangements;
  • making a legal will;
  • necessary legal documents including Power of Attorney and Guardianship, and;
  • guidance on negotiating with hospitals, schools and government authorities in the first days of assuming care of a child.
