Completing The Picture
The exhibition opened in March 1992 and toured Australia for 12 months, drawing over 100 000 visitors. It brought about significant, identifiable change. Most obviously, it authenticated and popularised women’s art and showed commercial galleries the viability of promoting women’s art.
It increased the profile of the artists in public collections. The Australian Financial Review attributed the increase by two thirds in the cost of a Dora Meeson painting totally to Completing the Picture. Wherever it has gone, this show has created ripples of change and initiative….It has also touched very ordinary people, usually excluded from the processes of cultural and intellectual debate.
Curator Juliet Peers quoted in VWT Annual Report1992-1993 p. 21.
