The story of Our Water Mark is the composite actions and stories of many citizens and scientists working together around water…..Our Water Mark is, ultimately, really the story of empowering citizens in a democracy, to be well informed and to stand up and be counted.

We started the Watermark Australia Project in 2000. In our view, increased ‘water literacy’ was the key to behaviour change, and women were well placed to engage communities in achieving deep cultural change.

An early grant from The Myer Foundation, and significant private funding from eight wonderful donors, mostly women, enabled us to run the project over a period of six years.

A process of 'kitchen table' dialogue occurred, involving several thousand women and men.  Their experience and wisdom was merged with the knowledge of scientists and technicians, and our own built expertise.

The project culminated in the publication, Our Water Mark.

Over 37,000 copies of this community reference now circulate across Australia, triggering action everywhere – helping to shape new school and university courses; being used by commercial enterprises to develop their water management strategies; and inspiring local people to work with their water authorities.

It is a very worthwhile and very sensible document that looks at some of the things I have been talking about and encourages people in relation to those themes -- that we need to be smarter about how we use water, we need to live within our own means and we need to look first of all at conserving and being more efficient with water before trying to generate water by other means.Peter Hall MP, Member for Easter Victorian Region, moving a Parliamentary Inquiry into Melbourne’s Future Water Use, Victorian Hansard 19 September 2007 p.2799 and p.2800.
