Risk: Ponch Hawkes

Monash Gallery of Art

12 August - 2 October 2005

Proudly sponsored by Bond Imaging

Monash Gallery of Art is proud to present the much anticipated exhibition by renowned photographer, Ponch Hawkes, who distills her 30 year experience into a three-themed show that explores the more surreal consequences of circus, this most breathtaking of arts.

Beyond Commitment, A Landscape of Wounds and Shattered Experiences are the three acts of Risk, Hawkes' extraordinary transformation of popular performance into images that excite and disturb.

The first act explores the moment when going back is no longer an option, the second finds beauty in the consequences of this obsession while the third considers the dislocation between promise and delivery.

Risk not only examines the perilous nature of circus performance but delivers intimate and provocative insights through Hawkes' exceptional vision and skill for capturing daring physical theatre.

As Dr Isobel Crombie, Senior Curator of Photography at the National Gallery of Victoria, states in the accompanying exhibition catalogue:

"Ponch has been drawn to capture the crucial moment of 'no return' in an act. She has often photographed the most breathtaking of performances where choices can have the most dramatic consequences...

"Using physical theatre as a metaphor, Ponch suggests that promises made can be broken and the moral fall that occurs can be just as definitive as any physical accident."

After years of documenting the art of the physical, Hawkes now creates her own art from her images of circus. Hawkes has been the photographer for, and a member of, Circus Oz since its inception in 1978.

Jane Scott, Director of the MGA said, "Risk is a dynamic and thrilling exhibition with heart stopping moments of craziness shown alongside the physical consequences of the high flying, daredevil circus performers."
