Dur-e Dara (Convenor, VWT) and Leanne Miller (Executive Director of KWMB) spoke of the significance of the twenty-year partnership between the two women’s organisations, one that would have few rivals elsewhere in Australia. Kerin Leonard from VEOHRC introduced Megan Davis who delivered a thought-provoking presentation focused on the issue of Aboriginal women and human rights. 50th Anniversary of the The Pill in Australia– an Incomplete Revolution
2011 is the 50th Anniversary of The Pill in Australia. To mark this significant milestone the Trust partnered with the University of Melbourne, Centre of Women’s Health, Gender and Society (CWHGS), to deliver a public lecture at BMW Edge, Federation Square on the 23rd November. A crowd of over 250 joined us to hear Dr Louise Keogh, Mary Crooks, Leslie Cannold and the hilarious Nelly Thomas explore the complexities of the Pill – the freedom it has afforded women, and the limitations it presents for gender equality.
Dr Louise Keogh said the introduction of the pill in 1961 marked, 'a turning point in heterosexual relationships', allowing women the freedom to time their families, careers and relationships. However, today the burden & responsibility of contraception still resides with women, doing little to further women’s equality. To read Dr. Louise Keogh's speech here:
Following our speakers, a Q & A session took place with one of our volunteers, Caetlyn Davis. Caetlyn is a Junior Doctor who has been working with us throughout the year, researching and compiling information for this event.
