The National Privacy Principles

The National Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act set out how private sector organisations should collect, use and disclose, keep secure, and provide access to personal information. The principles give individuals a right to know what information an organisation holds about them and a right to correct that information if it is wrong. The Federal Privacy Commissioner has written Guidelines to the National Privacy Principles to assist private sector organisations to meet their obligations in the handling ofpersonal information. The Victorian Women's Trust respects your rights to privacy protection under the National Privacy Principles. The Trust observes the National Privacy Principles and applicable privacy laws in collecting and handling your personal information.

Why we collect your personal information

The Trust's annual commitment to philanthropic granting is only made possible through the generosity and continued patronage of individual donors, members and supporters.

When you give us your personal information such as your name and address, we record it on our database and use it to contact you.

We may use your contact details to send you information on Trust activities including special events and fundraising programs.

Each time we send a direct marketing communication we will provide you with a means to notify us that you do not want to receive similar communications in the future.

How we collect your personal information

The Victorian Women's Trust only collects personal information necessary for its functions and activities.

We collect your personal information in a number of ways including:

  • Membership application forms
  • Event application forms
  • Donation processing
  • Merchandise purchases
  • Requests to be included on email database

How we keep your personal information

We take reasonable steps to protect any personal information we hold from misuse and loss, and from unauthorised access, modification or disclosure. This protection applies to personal information stored in electronic and hard copy form.

Using and disclosing your personal information

The Victorian Women's Trust will generally use or disclose your personal information for purposes related to the main purpose for which it was collected, or where you have consented to the use or disclosure.

For example, the Trust may provide personal information to contractors who assist us in providing our services. These include contractors that assist the Trust with database management, technology services and mailing services.

The Trust may otherwise use or disclose your personal information as required or authorised by or under law, which may include emergency situations and assisting in law enforcement.

Visiting our website

When you visit our website at www.vwt.org.au the Trust is able to detect where you have come from but not your identity. We don't track your path through our website and we don't use cookies.

We may preserve the content of any email or "contact us" or other electronic message that we receive through our website. Any personal information contained in such messages will be handled in accordance with this Privacy Statement. Message content may be monitored by our service providers or our employees for purposes including troubleshooting, compliance auditing and maintenance and where email abuse is suspected. We will record your email address if you send us a message and ask to be included on our email database.

Unfortunately no data transmission over the Internet can be guaranteed as completely secure. So while we strive to protect such information, we cannot ensure or warrant the security of any information transmitted to us over the Internet and individuals do so at their own risk. Once any personal information comes into our possession we take reasonable steps to protect the security of that information.

Our website may, from time to time, contain links to the websites of other organisations which may be of interest to you. Linked websites are responsible for their own privacy practices and you should check those websites fro their respective privacy statements.

How to access, correct or update your personal information

If you have any complaints, questions or concerns about what personal information the Victorian Women's Trust holds about you or about the accuracy of that information, please contact the Trust Office on 03 9642 0422 and ask to speak to Lieu Le.

If you would like to request access to, or correction of the information that we hold about you, you can write to Privacy Officer at the Victorian Women's Trust, Level 1, 388 Bourke Street, Melbourne 3000. In order to maintain the confidentiality of your personal information, we will ask you to visit the Trust office and to bring with you specific identification before we give you access. If it is not possible for you to visit our office, we will arrange to check your identification before we mail the information to you.

If the personal information that we hold about you is incorrect or not up to date, we will take reasonable steps to update it as soon as possible after you have shown us how and why it is incorrect.

In the unlikely event that we are not required by law to provide you with access to or correction of your personal information we will give you the reasons for that decision.
